Celebrate Women's History Month with BYU Women's Studies, the History Department, and children's book author and writing professor, Denise Lewis Patrick. Perhaps best know for her work writing historical fiction for American Girl, Patrick's latest books feature Melody, a young African American growing up in 1960's Detroit. Come hear about creating Melody, and what inspires the author. Like Melody, Patrick has been inspired by those who came before. As Patrick explains, "my great grandmother was Ida Mae Jackson Dixon. She was somewhat of a matriarch in the family. Her daughters, grand-daughters, and sisters-in-law were the women I grew up with, and it's their influence and conversations and experiences that become part of every girl character I create." (Book signing and reception to follow the lecture.)
